Three Emergency Shelters You Can Build Tonight

Exposure kills faster than hunger or thirst. In cold, wet, or windy conditions, your body can become hypothermic in under three hours. Shelter is your first priority after immediate safety. You do not need tools or tarps — natural materials are everywhere. Here are three shelters you can build with nothing but your hands and what the forest provides.

The Lean-To

The lean-to is the fastest shelter to build and the most versatile. It works in rain, wind, and moderate cold.

  1. Find a sturdy horizontal support — a fallen tree, a branch wedged between two trees, or a ridgepole lashed to standing trunks. It should be about waist height.
  2. Lean long branches against the support at a 45–60 degree angle, spacing them a hand's width apart. Steeper angles shed rain better; shallower angles trap more heat.
  3. Layer smaller branches, pine boughs, or leaves over the angled framework, starting from the bottom and working up like shingles. Each layer should overlap the one below.
  4. Add at least 6 inches of debris thickness. You should not be able to see daylight through the roof.

Orient the open side away from the wind. If you build a fire 3–4 feet in front of the opening, the lean-to acts as a reflector, bouncing heat back onto you. Place a log behind the fire as a backstop to further direct radiant heat your way.

The Debris Hut

When temperatures drop below freezing and you have no fire, a debris hut traps your body heat like a sleeping bag made of leaves. It is tighter and more insulated than a lean-to but takes more time to build.

  1. Create a ridgepole: a single strong branch about 9 feet long. Prop one end on a stump, rock, or forked stick about 3 feet high. The other end rests on the ground.
  2. Lean shorter sticks along both sides of the ridgepole like ribs, forming a narrow A-frame just wide enough for your body.
  3. Pile leaves, pine needles, grass, ferns, and any dry debris over the frame. You need at least 2–3 feet of material on all sides. More is better.
  4. Stuff the inside with loose dry leaves as insulation — this is your mattress and blanket.
  5. Create a door plug from a bundle of debris you can pull in behind you.

The debris hut should be barely large enough to fit your body. Dead air space is what insulates you — the smaller the interior, the faster it warms from your body heat alone. People have survived single-digit temperatures in well-built debris huts with no fire.

The Snow Cave

In deep snow (at least 5 feet), a snow cave provides remarkably stable shelter. The interior stays near 32°F (0°C) even when outside temperatures plunge far below zero.

  1. Find a deep, stable snowdrift or hillside with compacted snow. Avoid slopes with avalanche risk.
  2. Dig a tunnel entrance slightly below the level of the main chamber. Cold air sinks, so a lower entrance traps warm air inside.
  3. Hollow out a dome-shaped sleeping chamber large enough to sit up in. The ceiling should be arched — flat ceilings drip.
  4. Poke a ventilation hole through the roof with a stick. This is essential — without ventilation, carbon dioxide builds up dangerously.
  5. Carve a sleeping platform above the entrance level. Warm air rises, so the platform is the warmest spot.

Keep a stick inside to clear the ventilation hole if snow covers it. Mark the outside of the cave with a branch or colored item so rescuers (or you) can find it.
